Soft Summer vs Soft Autumn
Use the cooler-versus-warmer direction as a wardrobe comparison, with room for overlap.
Both names are used for muted palettes in 12-season color analysis. The useful comparison in this guide is the direction of warmth: our Soft Summer references lean cool, while Soft Autumn is described by its practitioners as warm-neutral. These are descriptive categories, not a test you can complete from a color chart.
Spicemarket Colour's Soft Autumn overview provides a practitioner's account of that category. Cate Linden's Soft Summer discussion describes the cool-neutral category. Our swatches are original examples, not reproductions of either practitioner's palette.
Similar softness, a different direction
| Wardrobe question | Soft Summer direction used here | Soft Autumn comparison direction |

Muted does not mean gray only. It also does not mean that every muted garment belongs to either of these categories. Broad names such as taupe, sage and rose cover many actual colors.
Make a small comparison
If you already own a gray-green and a yellower green, compare them with the same neutral garment in the same light. A second example might be a rosy brown beside a more golden brown. Try to keep lightness and fabric similar so that the comparison is easier to interpret.
Treat the result as a preference you noticed, not proof of your season. You may like both outfits for different occasions. This site does not use eye color, hair color, ancestry or a photograph to assign people to categories.
When the phone card helps
A downloaded card can remind you of a general direction while looking through your own wardrobe. It cannot turn a screen color into a reliable fabric measurement. Compare the actual fabric if possible, and follow your own comfort and preferences.
