Soft Summer vs Cool / True Summer
Compare softness and coolness without treating a screen palette as a diagnosis.
For this guide, Soft Summer means a muted, cool-leaning reference palette. Cool / True Summer names the cool-dominant comparison category. This is the vocabulary used here; if your analyst uses a different system, keep their definitions rather than assuming the labels are interchangeable.
What the comparison is trying to show
A 12-season practitioner describes Soft Summer as cool-neutral, while another describes True Summer as entirely cool. That distinction is more useful than trying to assign a season from one blue swatch. See Cate Linden's Soft Summer discussion and Spicemarket Colour's True Summer overview.
| Question | Soft Summer in this guide | Cool / True Summer in this guide |
|---|---|---|
| What leads the description? | A muted overall impression | A clearly cool direction |
| What can overlap? | Soft blues, roses, grays and some greens | Many of the same broad color families |
| What does a name prove? | Very little without the actual shade | Very little without the actual shade |
| Does a screen identify a person? | No | No |
An experiment with your own clothes
Choose two tops in the same broad family, such as blue. Compare a gray-influenced blue with a more obviously cool blue under the same light. Keep the rest of the outfit unchanged. Look at the full combination and whether you enjoy wearing it, rather than asking the screen to decide your season.
Repeat with a different family if you wish. This is a wardrobe exercise, not a validated personal color analysis. The effects of saturation, lightness and temperature are related; changing all three at once makes it hard to know what you prefer.
Why online comparisons can disagree
Different practitioners may use different terminology, physical palettes and teaching methods. Camera white balance, editing and display settings also change what you see. A single online chart cannot resolve those differences, and this site does not provide a second diagnostic palette for the comparison season.
You do not need to settle a label before enjoying a combination. Start with the original Soft Summer references, try an outfit recipe, and read the methodology before using a digital card to compare fabric.
